Just AI, an initiative of the Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF), champions ethical, rights-based artificial intelligence rooted in India’s constitutional values of equality, dignity, and the right to information. Recognising that technology is never neutral, Just AI addresses the structural inequalities embedded in AI—across caste, class, gender, and language.
Its work rests on four pillars: building community literacy through workshops and multilingual resources; policy advocacy for human rights-based AI regulation; community-led research to surface lived experiences of marginalised groups; and the Just AI Awards, which spotlight innovations tackling exclusion through inclusive, justice-driven tech.
Launched in 2024, the awards expand regionally in 2025 to spotlight transformative AI solutions across the Asia-Pacific. Just AI redefines how communities engage with emerging tech—empowering them not just to use AI, but to shape it. The initiative envisions AI as “ethical intelligence”—a tool for justice, dignity, and systemic equity in the Global South.
